Three Truss Base Protection Methods

For the most part, most truss base designs are built to last for decades, or even longer. However, there are times when the frame structure of the truss construction can become weak. This is especially true when it is not properly supported.

Over time, moisture, pests, and wood won't be able to withstand constant stress. When this happens, the truss base can get damaged and eventually succumb to a collapse. Fortunately, there are ways to help protect the truss from these elements. In this article, we will take a look at three of the best methods to prevent deterioration in the truss base.

Regular Maintenance: There are a few simple steps that you can perform on a regular basis that will keep your truss structure well-maintained. While some truss designs require wood rot resistant glue, it isn't required for every truss. If you decide to apply it, be sure to do so consistently, using appropriate packaging and labeling.

If you have high-speed rot, such as pine or spruce, you will need to apply protective covering to avoid the cover collapsing, potentially injuring the tree and you. The following steps will help protect the wood on your truss base.

Annual Checkup: After you remove the wood, make sure to inspect the underside of the truss base for chips and cracks. If you find any damaged areas, file them away to avoid future damage.

Removing Wood: For the most part, wood will naturally rot away with time. However, if you see large chunks of wood that are still attached to the frame, the wood will start to fall apart quickly. This is why you should remove wood by hand when possible.

Repairing the Structure: Often, it is possible to repair the frame itself if it is completely destroyed. As an alternative, it may be possible to repair the truss support panel. While this will cost a bit more than replacing the entire frame, it can save the integrity of the entire structure.
